Medical Acupuncture
Medical acupuncture is not a method, but a set of principles based on anatomy
and physiology. These principles involve stimulation of certain points throughout
the body tissues. For thousands of years, achieving the therapeutic effect of
acupuncture has relied on the use of needles. Today, acupuncture can be performed
using electrical stimulation, providing excellent results for a wide variety
of ailments.
Another form of acupuncture, as applied to the outer ear, is called auriculotherapy.
It can be effective at relieving chronic pain and depression, reducing dependency
on nicotine and other addictive substances, and stimulating the immune system
to facilitate healing.
While acupuncture may be considered an ancient Chinese art, it has come to be
acknowledged by many medical practitioners as a viable means to achieve relief
from a variety of disorders. Pain and chronic conditions not responsive to drugs
or other types of therapy can often be resolved through acupuncture.
The World Health Organization (WHO) and the National Institute of Health (NIH)
confirm that acupuncture is effective for a wide variety of common health complaints.
Acupuncture has been successful in treating conditions such as common colds,
sinusitis, lower back pain, headaches and migraines. Many other conditions can
also be treated with acupuncture. Overall, acupuncture provides the following
benefits:
Increase in vitality and energy
Stress reduction and deep relaxation
Enhanced athletic and physical function
Chiropractic Neurology
Chiropractic neurology applies the non-drug therapies of chiropractic to enhance
neurological function and provide relief for many conditions. Worldwide, there
are fewer than 600 chiropractic neurologists, and Dr. Dunn is one of only three
in the Jacksonville area who is board-certified.
The basis for chiropractic neurology is the relationship of the central nervous
system to spinal mobility. Spinal joints must move freely in order to provide
optimal function throughout the central nervous system. If free movement is
suppressed through prolonged immobilization, the result is loss of muscle tone,
decreased brain activity, and increased pain. Chiropractic neurology promotes
the healing of muscles and joints throughout the body by providing a powerful
stimulus to the brain and nervous system without the use of drugs or
surgery.
Neuromuscular Therapy
Neuromuscular therapy is a form of massage therapy specifically effective for
back pain arising from soft tissue injury, such as muscle strain. The American
Academy of Pain Management recommends this form of massage therapy to promote
the healing response in non-inflamed soft tissues.
Soft tissue damage in one area of the body may cause symptoms in other areas,
which may also be relieved with massage. To address muscles in spasm, neuromuscular
therapy alternates a concentrated pressure on the affected areas. Pain is relieved
through relaxation of muscles in spasm as well as stimulation of the nervous
system through the muscles.
Nutritional Supplementation
Nutrition plays a vital role in total wellness. When an individual is trying
to regain health from injuries or chronic conditions, Dr. Dunn strongly recommends
increased attentiveness to good eating habits, vitamin and mineral supplementation,
and drinking a gallon of water each day.
Research and studies demonstrate that, for many people, a daily multivitamin
may not be adequate. Daily recommended requirements for vitamins and minerals
were formulated based on the amounts necessary to prevent disease. However,
recent studies have focused on the role of the nutrients themselves and whether
their function in the body may be optimized at higher levels. Dr. Dunns
philosophy includes nutritional supplementation of the daily diet. Patients
can experience an increased speed of healing in their bones, tissues, and muscles
through proper nutrition and appropriate supplementation.
To provide his patients the optimum path to healing and promotion of good health,
Dr. Dunn shares with his patients research that supports the value of nutritional
supplementation. Glucosamine has recently been found to promote healing and
even slow down degeneration of weight-bearing joints. Other vitamins and minerals
play a definitive role in bone health and other types of chronic nerve and muscle
dysfunction.
