Take a Load Off! Backpack Tips

A child should carry less than 10% of their body weight.

Know the type of backpack to use:

• Proportional to body size

• Shoulder straps should be adjustable,
padded and at least two inches wide

• The back of the pack should be padded

• A waist belt or hip strap helps to distribute
   the weight of the pack

• Multiple compartments allow you to even
   out the weight

• Consider a backpack on wheels

Know how to wear it right:

• Use both shoulder straps

• Use your legs in lifting the pack from the floor

• Place the pack on a table and put on one strap at a time

• Heaviest items should be carried closest to your body

• Adjust the straps for a proper fit

• Use the waist belt to take the strain off of your shoulders.
